The Night Circus
The Night Circus is a novel by Erin Morgenstern. It was first published in 2011 by Harvill Secker. It is an enchanting tale of a circus like no other.
"The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it... It is simply there when yesterday it was not." The circus is only black and white. It only works at night. No one knows where it will pop up next. The circus is the most marvelous thing anyone has ever seen. Two magicians, Prospero the enchanter and Mr. A. H. challenge each other with their two students. Prospero chooses his little daughter Celia Bowen whereas Mr. A. H. chooses a young boy named Marco Alisdair. From a very young age, Celia and Marco are bound to be each other's rivals, but they have never met. They don't know what is the competition, when it will start, where it will take place, what will the winner win, what will the loser lose. Both of their questions go unanswered by their teachers. They keep practicing in hope of the day to come when they, at last, get free from this bind.
It is very difficult to summarise the book for this book is not only about one particular thing. It has a vast range. It is about age-old rivalry, it is about love, it is about magic, it is about the circus. I think it would be best to not categorize this book and enjoy all the things this book has to offer. From the very first page, a sense of mystery surrounds the story. Readers are met with the circus, a circus so grand and fascinating, the human mind can't fathom at one try. The writing of the book is so brilliant that it felt I was transported to the circus, will all the big circular tents around me and mind-blowing performances. Then readers are met with the characters of the story or what we may also call, the game. The book spans a decade. Each chapter starts with the date and place of occurrence and of course, the time is not in order. The whole book feels like a scrambled puzzle and the chapters are its pieces. By reading each chapter carefully we are placing a piece in its correct position. Only after completing all the chapters, we will get to see the whole picture.
******Spoiler Alert!****** Though this book is solely not about love, it has given me one of my favorite love stories. Celia and Marco, two people who are chosen to fight each other, who are literally binded to this game, fall in love with each other. Though it sounds cliche the reason behind this is what made me fall into love with this book. They both spent their every waking hour thinking what the powers of another would be. What they did, build with their magic was always for the other person to see. They were each other's lives since the start of the competition, of course, they were in love even before they met each other. A love as extraordinary as the circus is written in this book.
It is one of my favorites. To someone reading it I advise you not to rush through the chapters to finish it or to find out who wins. Take your time and understand even minute things because the Night Circus is just not a book, it's an experience.
“You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone's soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows that they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift.”
